The main difference

DocSend is a document-sharing and analytics tool that grew into data rooms (it calls them Spaces). Its strength is detailed page-by-page analytics on a deck, plus security features like NDA gating and dynamic watermarking on its Advanced plans.

DataRooms is an AI data room built for fundraising. The core of it is an assistant that has read your documents: investors ask questions in plain language and get answers grounded in your files, with the source cited, at any hour. You see which questions each investor asked, which is one of the clearest signals of what they care about and how serious they are.

Pricing

DocSend has no free plan. Its Personal ($10/user/month) and Standard ($45/user/month) plans cover tracked sharing; data rooms with visitor email authentication, NDAs and watermarking start on Advanced at $150/month for 3 users, and the full data room tier (Advanced Data Rooms) is $180/month. All prices are billed yearly; monthly billing costs more.

DataRooms has a free plan for building your room and trying the AI. Shareable tracked links and analytics start on Pro at €29/month, or €19/month billed yearly. Scale (€79/month, or €63/month billed yearly) adds an investor CRM and AI digests. See DataRooms pricing.

Where DocSend is better

  • NDA gating, watermarking and e-signatures. If investors must sign an NDA before viewing, or you want every page watermarked, DocSend has it and DataRooms does not yet.
  • Page-by-page deck analytics. DocSend shows exactly which slides each viewer spent time on.
  • Brand recognition. Investors have opened DocSend links for years.
  • Integrations. DocSend connects to Dropbox, Google Drive, Box and OneDrive, and has Gmail and Outlook extensions.

Where DataRooms is better

  • Investors get answers without waiting for you. The AI answers from your documents, cites the source, and says so when your documents don't cover a question.
  • Questions as signals. You see what each investor asked, so you know what to address in your next conversation.
  • Built around the raise. Engagement scoring, an investor CRM and AI digests help you decide who to follow up with.
  • Price. A shareable, tracked data room costs a fraction of DocSend's data room plans, and you can start free.

Which should you choose?

Choose DataRooms if you're raising pre-seed to Series B, want investors to engage with your materials rather than just open them, and want to know who is serious.

Choose DocSend if you mostly send a pitch deck, need NDA gating or watermarking today, or your investors or advisors already expect DocSend links.

Frequently asked questions

Is DataRooms a good DocSend alternative for startups?

Yes, if your priority is investor engagement during a raise. DataRooms adds an AI that answers investor questions from your documents and shows you the questions each investor asks, and it has a free plan. If you need NDA gating, watermarking or e-signatures, DocSend covers those and DataRooms does not yet.

Is DocSend free?

No. DocSend offers a 14-day free trial but no free plan. Its paid plans start at $10 per user per month billed yearly, and data rooms start on the Advanced plan at $150 per month for 3 users.

Does DocSend have AI?

DocSend's AI features (AI organize, which suggests a folder structure and sorts files, and an MCP connector in beta) help the account owner manage the room. It does not offer an AI that answers investors' questions from your documents.
