The main difference
Papermark started as an open-source alternative to DocSend and has grown into a full virtual data room for fundraising and M&A, with page-by-page analytics, strong access controls, an AI assistant and a public API.
DataRooms is narrower by design: an AI data room for founders raising a round. It focuses on getting investors answers quickly and turning their activity into a clear signal of who is interested, with engagement scoring, the questions each investor asked, and an investor CRM on the Scale plan.
Pricing
Papermark's free plan covers tracked document sharing (up to 50 documents and 50 links) but not data rooms. Paid plans are Pro (€24/month), Business (€59/month) and Data Rooms (€99/month with 3 team members), with Data Rooms Plus at €249/month, all billed yearly. Monthly billing costs more.
DataRooms' free plan includes one data room with AI answers, but shareable links and analytics start on Pro at €29/month, or €19/month billed yearly. Scale costs €79/month (€63 billed yearly). See DataRooms pricing.
Where Papermark is better
- Security controls. NDA agreements, dynamic watermarking, granular file-level permissions and viewer groups are included in its Data Rooms plan.
- Open source. You can audit the code and self-host for full control over your data.
- Free tracked sharing. Its free plan lets you send tracked document links at no cost.
- Breadth. Custom domains, a public API, a CLI and an MCP server suit teams with many deals or technical workflows.
Where DataRooms is better
- Built for the raise. Engagement scoring, the questions each investor asked, AI digests and an investor CRM are designed around who to follow up with.
- Lower price for a shareable data room. €19/month billed yearly, against €99/month for Papermark's Data Rooms plan.
- Simple by default. Create a room, upload, share a link per investor. There's little to configure.
